8 (S. 9.) "It has been repeatedly urged by continental critics", sagt ein mir persönlich unbekannter, aber sehr wohlwollender Beurtheiler des Kosmos (Atlas, 9 Jan. 1858), "that Bn Humboldt has not entirely solved his cosmographical axiom; still, Kosmos is a gorgeous accumulation of facts, the result of immense experience, study, and research, combined with some equally grand apercus, points de vue, and theories. It is an improved Pliny of the present time, just such a work as a savant and a traveller of his rank could produce. Whether such acquirements could be combined with the high generalising genius of Plato, and the still older Greek sages, we have no means of judging, as no such constellation has yet appeared amongst the ranks of man."
9 S. die vortreffliche Abhandlung Regnault's in den Annales de Chimie T. 73. 1840 p. 5; 3eme Serie T. I. 1841 p. 129, T. IX. 1843 p. 322.
